A low molecular weight endo-xylanase has been isolated from an actinomycete strain of Chainia. The purified enzyme which has been partially sequenced is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight between 5,000 and 9,000, estimated at 6,000 ± 1,000. This small molecule xylanase has specific activity for xylan, selectively converting it to oligosaccharides, the enzyme having no significant activity for cellulose.
