The usefulness of the low temperature dehydrogenation by N-bromosuccinimide is illustrated in the 9, 10-dihydrophenantheren serie. The syntheses of 2, 7-di-chloromethyl-phenanthrene, 2, 7-di-bromomethyl-phenanthrene and hexabromo-[23] (2,7) phenanthrenophane by NBS-dehydrogenation are described.
