The present invention relates to a 1,8-naphthyridine derivative of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is a fluorine or chlorine atom, and R is a hydrogen atom, or a methyl or ethyl group; and esters thereof and salts thereof are processes for preparation thereof. These compounds show excellent anti-bacterial activity and are useful antibacterial agents.

A number of 7-substituted-1-tert-butyl-6-fluoroquinolone-3-carboxylic acids and 7-substituted-1-tert-butyl-6-fluoro-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acids have been prepared and tested for antibacterial activities. Among those the 7-aminopyrrolidinyl 20b and the 7-diazabicyclo naphthyridine 18b are the most potent compounds in vitro and in vivo. Physicochemical data and acute toxicity are also discussed
Novel 1-thienyl-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an amino (lower) alkyl, R.sup.2 is thienyl, and X is a halogen atom, and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, said compounds having excellent antimicrobial activity and hence being useful as an antimicrobial agent, and a pharmaceutical composition comprising as an active ingredient said 1-thienyl-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid compounds or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
