  Polyphosphazene polymers are prepared which contain repeating units represented by the formulas: wherein X is represented by: wherein R,, R2 and R, are independently selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted alkyl and alkoxy radicals containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and aryl radicals; X' is chlorine or a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy, aryloxy, amino or mercapto radical or mixture thereof, which are compatible with the alkoxy substituent containing a fully substituted carbon in the beta position; and 20 < (w + y + x) < 50,000 per polymer. The polymers of the invention can be utilized to form protective films, and can also be utilized in applications such as for molding, coatings, foams and the like.
