  Verfahren zur Herstellung von 4-Hydroxy-1,2,2-trimethyl-cyclopentylmethylketonen der allgemeinen Formel I, insbesondere von dem für die Herstellung des begehrten roten Farbstoffes Capsorubin benötigten (1R,4S)-4-Hydroxy-1,2,2-trimethyl-cyclopentylmethylketon der Formel Ia ausgehend von 2,2,6-Trimethyl-cyclohexanonen der allgemeinen Formel II über die neuen Zwischenprodukte der allgemeinen Formeln V und VI durch diastereoselektives Epoxidieren und Umsetzen der erhaltenen 7-Oxa-bicyclo[4.1.0]heptane der allgemeinen Formel VIII mit Lewis-Säuren und ggf. Entfernen der Schutzgruppe. Beansprucht werden auch die neuen Zwischenprodukte der Formel V sowie deren (1S)- und (1R)-Isomeren und die der Formel VIII, sowie deren (1R,3S,6S)-, (1S,3S6R)- und (1R,3R,6S)-Isomeren.
