Synthesis of α-keto aldehydes <i>via</i> selective Cu(<scp>i</scp>)-catalyzed oxidation of α-hydroxy ketones

An efficient approach to synthesize α-keto aldehydes was established through selective oxidation of α-hydroxyketones catalyzed by Cu(I) using oxygen as oxidant. A wide array of α-keto aldehydes was prepared with isolated yields of up to 87%. The potential utilization of this reaction was evaluated by gram-scale reactions and synthetic applications.

Acylphosphoniumylids 1 react with vinylketones 2 under formation of 1-acyl-4-oxoylids 3. in the reaction of carboalkoxytriphenylphosphoranes 4 with 2 two reaction pathways occur. Ln polar solvents again a Michael-addition gives the phosphoranes 6, whereas in nonpolar solvents a quasimethathesis-reaction leads to acrylic esters 9 and the acylphosphoranes 1.
