    Biologically Compatible, Phosphorescent Dimetallic Rhenium Complexes Linked through Functionalized Alkyl Chains: Syntheses, Spectroscopic Properties, and Applications in Imaging Microscopy

    A range of luminescent, dimetallic complexes based upon the rhenium fac-tricarbonyl diimine core, linked by aliphatic chains of varying lengths and functionality, have been synthesized and their photophysical properties examined. Each complex displays characteristic (MReLdiimineCT)-M-3 emission in aerated acetonitrile solution, with long lifetimes in the range of 129-248 ns and corresponding quantum yields in the range 3.2-8.0%. In aqueous solution, as opposed to acetonitrile, the complexes generally show a small hypsochromic shift in lambda(em) and an extension of the (MLCT)-M-3 lifetime, attributed to a hydrophobically driven association of the alkyl chains with the rhenium-bound diimine units. In live cell imaging experiments using MCF7 cells the complexes all show good uptake by non-energy dependent mechanisms without endosomal entrainment, and with varying propensity to localize in organelles. The degrees of uptake and localization properties are discussed in terms of the length and chemical nature of the linkers, and in terms of the likely interactions between these and the various cellular components encountered.

    A novel pH-responsive Bola type surfactant FA–AA was constructed by formation of the CN dynamic covalent bond using 4-formylbenzoic acid (FA) and 12-aminolauric acid (AA).     A resin composition comprising a polylactic acid-based resin (A) and methacrylic resins (B), wherein the methacrylic resins having at least (a) a difference of 10°C or more in glass transition temperature or (b) a difference of 3% or more in syndiotacticity; it is preferred that at least one of the methacrylic resins (B) is a methacrylic resin having a weight average molecular weight of 50,000 to 450,000, a glass transition temperature of 110°C or higher and a syndiotacticity of 40% or more, and that the resin composition further contains a multilayer structure polymer formed as particles each consisting of a core layer and one or more shell layers covering it (C).     Active components comprising lauric acid, or a lauric acid derivative, are utilized independently, or in combination, to provide new and useful compositions for bacteriostatic action against susceptible pathogens. The lauric acid derivative includes one or more of 12-aminododecanoic acid, 12-amino-1-dodecanoic acid methyl ester, sucrose monolaurate, 12-(7-nitrobenzofurazan-4-ylamino) dodecanoic acid, 4-nitrophenyl dodecanoate, 1-lauroyl-rac-glycerol, 3-oxo-N-(2-oxocyclohexyl) dodecanamide, butyl laurate, benzyl laurate, isoamyl laurate, monolaurin, isopropyl laurate, pentyl laurate, and hexyl laurate. A preparation includes combining the active component with lecithin, and after an initial processing phase, coating with chitosan or a carrier. Final compositions may be or may contain particles, such as nanoparticles. Final compositions, or formulations containing said final compositions, may be utilized internally, causing one or more membrane changes (e.g., a membrane of an internal target pathogen, which may or may not be an antibiotic-resistant pathogen). At least some compositions inhibit growth of one or more Gram-positive bacterial species and one or more Gram-negative bacterial species.
