  Sterols 1 were converted to 3α-5-cyclo-6-ones 4 via their mesylates and subsequent oxidation. Refluxing 4 with sodium bromide/p-toluene sulfonic acid in dimethylformamide gave steroidal 2-en-6-ones 5, among which 5d is an important brassinolide intermediate.

  A process for producing a steroid compound which is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing plant growth regulators, brassinosteroids, and is represented by the general formula (4): wherein R₁ is in which R₂ is a methyl or ethyl, and * indicates the binding site of R₁ to a steroid nucleus, or general formula (5): where in R₁ is as defined above.
