3,5-Dihydroxytoluene is acylated in the 2-position by octanoyl chloride in the presence of aluminium chloride. In polyphosphoric acid it reacts with 7-oxo-octanoic acid and with crotonic acid to give the corresponding 4-acyl derivative and 7-hydroxy-2,5-dimethylchroman-4-one respectively.
