  The present invention relates to expedient method for synthesis of 3-substituted-3-hydroxy-oxindole derivatives, which are useful as synthetic precursors to valuable pharmaceutical compounds. These are synthesized by reacting nitromethane with the corresponding isatins of formula (I). The reaction process of isatins was carried using water as a solvent at room temperature to form the corresponding 3-hydroxy-3-nitromethylindolin-2-ones of formula (II).

  The electrolysis of carbonyl compounds and nitromethane in methanol or in the mixture of methanol and DMF in an undivided cell results in the formation of corresponding β-nitroalcohols in 60–75% yields. Thus, the simple electrocatalytic system can produce under mild conditions an electrochemically induced Henry reaction.

  3,4-dimethoxycyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione in two steps. A 2.5 mol-% loading of the organocatalyst successfully catalyzed the asymmetric allylation of isatins with allyltributyltin to give the corresponding 3-allyl-3-hydroxyoxindoles in high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee).
