Synthesis of an underrepresented buckybowl is described, including a description of its potent reactivities. The key to success is to readily prepare a tetra-brominated and highly-distorted precursor of dibenzo[g,p]chrysenes. The precursor undertook intra-molecular cyclization to form double pentagons, giving a gram-scale buckybowl skeleton, namely diindeno(1,2,3,4-defg:1’,2’,3’,4’-mnop)chrysene.

The photophysical and electronic properties of dibenzo[ g, p]chrysenes bearing electron-rich and -deficient substituents vary markedly with these substituents. The chemistry of the first liquid-crystalline dibenzo[ g, p]chrysene is also described.
