A polyol, found in the cell-wall of Nocardia asteroides R 399 as a component of a neutral polysaccharide mainly composed of D-arabinose and D-galactose, was identified by mass spectrometry, paper chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and gas chromatography as 6-deoxy-D-altritol.

The present invention relates to a method for the cosmetic treatment of keratin materials, in particular the skin, comprising the application of a composition to the keratin materials, such as the skin, said composition comprising a compound (I), wherein R is as defined in the description and S* is a mono or polysaccharide.
