The unique structure of oxyallyls represents a significant challenge for their catalyticasymmetric applications. Herein, an unprecedented chiral imidodiphosphoric acid-catalytic enantioselective (3 + 3) cycloaddition between oxyallyl zwitterions generated in situ from α-haloketones and α-diazomethylphosphonates was developed. A Pd-catalyzed enantioselective C–H carbonylation by desymmetrization was developed with commercially available L-pyroglutamic acid as chiral ligand. Isoquinolinones were successfully obtained with good yields and high enantioselectivities. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations provided a reasonable reaction pathway.

Ketones can be easily obtained by electroreduction in an undivided cell of an organichalide - metal carbonyl mixture using a Ni-bpy catalytic system in DMF (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine). The process is especially well convenient for primary benzyl and alkyl halides.

Tribenzo[a,d,j]corannulene (5) has been synthesized in four linear steps from commercially available starting materials on a half-gram scale in 18% overall yield. An X-ray crystal structure of this triply benzannulated geodesic polyarene confirms the prediction that successive benzannulation of corannulene has a gradual flattening effect on the bowl-shaped core.
