  25,27-Dihydroxy-26,28-dimethoxycalix[4]arene (1) can be selectively chloromethylated at the para-position position of the phenol rings to give 11,23-di(chloromethyl)-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dimethoxycalix[4]arene (2) in excellent yield. 2 react easily with alcohols, phenols, or mercaptan to give the nucleophilic substitution products 6 in good to excellent yields.
