bis(salicylaldehyde)-linked porphyrins and ethylenediamine under high dilution gave salen-capped porphyrins in high yields. Site selective insertion of nickel(II) into the salen and zinc(II) into the porphyrin gave the corresponding Ni–Zn heterobinuclear complexes.
