A range of analogues of the natural germination stimulant, strigol, for parasitic weeds of the genera Striga and Orobanche, has been prepared. Most of the products contain an α-formyl-γ-lactone (or α-formyl-γ-lactam) grouping attached through an enol-ether linkage to the 5-position of a but-2-enolide. Some have shown sufficiently high activities as to warrant large-scale field trials.

Oxidation of halogen salts with m-chloroperbenzoic acid in the presence of 18-crown-6 and of suitable hydroxy or carboxy alkenes leads readily to high yield production of cyclichalogenoethers of halogenolactones.
Unsaturatedacids and alcohols interact with Oxone® and KI in acetonitrile-H 2 O and undergo iodolactonization and iodoetherification in short times with good yields. The reaction has been used for the formal synthesis ofmintlactone starting from isopulegol.

Various epoxy esters readily reacted with SmI2 (2 equiv) in the presence of ethyl bromoacetate (1 equiv) and HMPA (6 equiv) under mild conditions (THF, −78 °C, 2 h, Ar) providing the corresponding γ-lactones via tandem epoxide opening-cyclization reaction in good to excellent yields.
