Gold catalysts have been found to catalyze the tandem assembly of arynes and terminal alkynes efficiently in the presence of CuI under mild reaction conditions to provide useful alkynylated biphenyl derivatives.
2-Arylbenzoylchlorides undergo annulativecoupling with internal alkynes in the presence of a catalyst system of [IrCl(cod)]2/P(t-Bu)3 to selectively afford the corresponding phenanthrenederivatives accompanied by elimination of carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride. Some alkylnaphthalene and alkylphenanthrene sulfonates were synthesized by means of a Wurtz–Fittig reaction.
