The catalytic cross aldol reaction between a silyl enol ether and an aldehyde has been applied to the furane series giving the ketols RCOCH2CHOHR' (R or R' = 2-furyl). Good results (with no resinification or crotonisation) have been obtained using bismuth trichloride in presence of sodium iodide as catalytic system, which allows to isolate the intermediaire silylated derivatives.

Four iridiumcomplexes containing furan moieties were synthesized and characterized. The positioning of the furan unit had a strong effect on the optical properties of the complexes. The synthetic methodologies developed pave the way for the introduction of oligofuran compounds in IrIII heterolepticcomplexes for OLED applications.
