    The Ti(III) azido complex (PN)(2)Ti(N-3) (PN- = (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphino)-4-Methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide), can be reduced with KC8 to, afford the nitride salt [mu(2)-K(OEt2)](2)[(PN)(2)Ti equivalent to N](2) in excellent yield. While treatment of the dimer with 18-crown-6 yields a mononuclear nitride, complete encapsulation of the alkali metal with cryptand provides the terminally bound nitride as a discrete salt [K(2,2,2-Kryptofix][(PN)(2)Ti equivalent to N]. All complexes reported here have been,structurally confirmed and also spectroscopically, and the Ti-N-nitride bonding has been probed theoretically via DFT-based methods.

    This disclosure provides a family of compounds that absorb and fluoresce in the short wave infrared region (SWIR, optionally 1000 nm to 1300 nm), including hydrophilic compounds that exhibit absorption and emission spectral profiles in aqueous solutions substantially similar to those observed in organic solvents such as methanol or DMSO. The compounds can be chemically linked to biomolecules including proteins, nucleic acids, and therapeutic small molecules. The compounds are useful for imaging in a variety of medical, biological and diagnostic applications, including SWIR in vivo imaging of regions of interest within a mammal.

    Thionyl tetrafluoride gas reacts efficiently with primary amines to form reactive iminosulfur oxydifluoride compounds. These dual SVI-F loaded iminosulfur oxydifluoride compounds, in turn, readily react with secondary amines or aryloxy silyl ethers (ArO-SiR3), yielding the corresponding fused heteroatom-linked substrates. Iminosulfur oxyfluoride polymers also are provided by disclosed methods.

    Condensation of fluoro-substituted and silyl-substituted monomers provides polymers suitable for use, e.g., as engineering polymers. A monomer composition is condensed in the presence of a bifluoride or poly(hydrogen fluoride) fluoride salt. The monomer composition contains a compound of formula F-X-F and a compound of formula (R1)3Si-Z-Si(R1)3, and forms an alternating X-Z polymer chain and a silyl fluoride byproduct. X has the formula -A(-R2-A)n -; each A is SO2, C(=O), or Het; R2 is an organic moiety; n is 0 or 1; Het is an aromatic nitrogen heterocycle; Z has the formula -L-R3-L-; each L is O, S, or N(R4); and each R3 is an organic moiety, and R4 comprises H or an organic moiety.

    A method of selectively extracting anions from an aqueous solution using an anion encapsulating aggregate formed upon the addition of a solvent, a copper contributor, a hydroxide contributor, an optional counterion contributor, and at least one encapsulating anion to an aqueous solution containing the anions, or upon the addition of a solvent, a polymeric chain of [Cu II (μ-OH)(μ-ea)] ∞ and optionally, a counterion contributor to the aqueous solution. The aggregates include compounds of the formula cis-Cu II x (OR 1 ) y (R 2 ea) z , where R 1 is H or an alkyl group, R 2 is H, or an alkyl group or a charged group, ea is an encapsulating anion, and each of x, y, and z is equal to an integer between about 1 and 40, inclusive. In addition, anion encapsulating aggregates can be formed by synthesis with alternate encapsulating anions by substituting alternate encapsulating anions for the encapsulating anion incorporated in the aggregate.

    Derivatives of compounds containing a carbonyl group conjugated to an aromatic moiety and methods of fabrication thereof consisting of a thioether, an ester, an ether, a phosphate and a silylether. Electrons are supplied to the carbonyl group con­jugated to an aromatic moiety to form a reduced material. The reduced material is contacted with an electrophile which attacks and chemically combines with the carbonyl group conjugated to an aromatic moiety. The parent material can be regenerated by hydrolysis of the derivative. A silyl derivative can be selectively formed on a polyimide material surface which can act as a barrier to an RIE etch of the polyimide material. After etch the polyimide material is regenerated from the silyl derivative.
