To provide a light-emitting material containing a compound having a high excitation triplet level, particularly a host material of a light emitting layer, as a material for an organic electroluminescent device with high efficiency, and also to provide an organic electroluminescent device with high efficiency and high luminance by using the material. A light-emitting material containing a compound having a carbazole ring structure represented by the following general formula (1), and an organic electroluminescent device containing a pair of electrodes and one layer or plural layers including at least a light emitting layer intervening between the electrodes, the light emitting layer containing as a constitutional material thereof the light-emitting material.

A compound that emits fluorescence and delayed fluorescence is provided as a material for an organic electroluminescent device of high efficiency, and an organic photoluminescent device and an organic electroluminescent device of high efficiency and high luminance are provided using this compound. The compound of a general formula (1) having a diazatriphenylene ring structure is used as a constituent material of at least one organic layer in the organic electroluminescent device that includes a pair of electrodes, and one or more organic layers sandwiched between the pair of electrodes.

A method for making metal (8-quinolinolate) complexes from air and moisture stable reagents is described. For example, the making of aluminum tris(quinolinolates), such as tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato), from aluminum (III) carboxylates, such as aluminum lactate and aluminum stearate, is described.
