  Substituted methanephosphonic acid derivatives of formula (I) or (II) or wherein R is (a) a group R1O in which R1 is H, a cation, or an ester radical, or (b) a group R2R3N- wherein R2 is H, or optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl; R3 is defined as for R2 or may also be a phenyl or acyl group; or R2 and R3, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring; R4 is H or a cation; R5 is H, a cation or an alkyl group; and R6 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl radical. These compounds are useful as broad-spectrum herbicides.
