    The invention provides compositions and methods for the oxidative coloring of human hair. The compositions of the invention contain as a primary dye intermediate a 1-(4-aminophenyl) pyrrolidine, or a cosmetically acceptable salt thereof. The compositions may also contain at least one other primary intermediate and conventional coupling compounds, in addition to an oxidizing agent and other components typically used in oxidative hair dye preparations. Preferred dye intermediates in the compositions of the invention include 1-(4-aminophenyl) pyrrolidine and 1-(4-amino-3-methylphenyl) pyrrolidine, or cosmetically acceptable salts thereof, which produce intense neutral colors when used in admixture with a suitable coupling agents, such as 3-aminophenol, in conventional hair dye base formulations.

    The invention provides a method of assessing the potential color protecting effect in vivo of a test formulation such as rinse-off hair treatment formulation, the method comprising the steps of: providing a sample of the test formulation to be assessed; providing a model substrate in the form of a hair switch which has been artificially colored; applying the test formulation to the hair switch; subsequently rinsing the test formulation from the hair switch; collecting the rinse liquor and analysing it for the presence of eluted color; characterized in that the artificial color used to color the hair switch is a permanent hair colorant with a shade level 1 or 2 according to the International Color Chart (I.C.C.). The method provides improved sensitivity and differentiation, and enables the tester to compare different technologies in terms of effectiveness.

    The invention provides a packaged composition for the oxidative coloration of hair which is formulated in two parts, the composition comprising: (i) an aqueous hair colorant part comprising one or more oxidative dye precursors, and less than 1% oleic acid by weight based on total weight of part (i); (ii) an aqueous colour developer part comprising one or more oxidising agents, at least 5% stearic acid by weight based on total weight of part (ii); and less than 1% oleic acid by weight based on total weight of part (ii); in which parts (i) and (ii) are adapted to be mixed together before application to the hair. The compositions provide an improved level of hair damage protection during the colouring process without compromising on colour delivery.

    The present invention describes a two-part oxidative hair dye composition which comprises in one or both component parts at least one polyether polyurethane in combination with at least one cationic conditioning agent. The two component parts of the composition comprise a dye component composition, which includes primary intermediates and couplers, and a developing component composition, which includes an oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide. It has surprisingly been found by the present inventors that nonionic polyether polyurethane polymers and cationic conditioning agents contained in the oxidative hair dye compositions of the present invention impart and significantly enhance additional conditioning and rheological benefits to the hair. Other components commonly used in oxidative hair dye products can be added to one or both component parts of the compositions of the present invention. After mixing the two component compositions, the resulting hair dye composition mixture is thick, conveniently applied, and provides superior rheological and conditioning properties to the hair.
