Di-, and trisubstituted 1,3-dienes are converted to gamma,delta-unsaturated acids by use of formic acid, carbon monoxide, and catalytic quantities of Pd-C/PPh(3)/Ph(2)P(CH2)(4)PPh(2) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. A beta,gamma-unsaturated acid was obtained when the monosubstituted diene, isoprene, was used as the reactant.
