The present invention is characterized by a smectic liquid crystal compound represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R is selected from alkyl and alkoxy groups; X from ##STR2## m and n are natural numbers; and R* is an optically active group containing an asymmetric carbon atom, and a liquid crystal composition containing said compound as a component. This article reports new results on synthesis and mesomorphic properties of the homologous series of (S)-1-methylheptyl-4-(4'-alkyloxybiphenylthiocarboxy)-benzoates, referred to as (S)-MHPSBOn, where Ovaries from 7 to 10 and denotes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. These compounds are sulphur analogous to a liquid crystal known as MHPOBC, where the central ester bridge was replaced with the -COS- connecting group. The (S)-MHPSBOn homologous series possesses enantiotropic SmA*, SmC*, SmCA* and monotropic Sml(*) phases for n = 7-10. The (S)-MHPSBO7 compound has also smectic chiral subphases: SmC alpha*, and SmC gamma*. Mesomorphic Properties of New 5-Alkyl-2-Pyrimidinols Esters
A synthesis of a number of 5-alkyl-2-pyrimidinol esters was conducted, their mesomorphic properties were examined. Two ring esters of said pyrimidinols are nonmesomorphic, while three ring esters are typical mesogens, forming nematic either nematic-smectic mesophases.
