    of the ethyl-substituted derivative thermally returned back to the open-ring isomer much faster than that of the methyl-substituted derivative. The difference in the thermal stability was well explained by the ground state energy difference between open- and closed-ring isomers. Excellent fatigue resistance and appropriate thermal fading rates were observed for the derivative having cyano substituents

    The relaxation properties of the lowest excited states of singlet and triplet multiplicity of some photochromes with dipyrrolylperfluorocyclopentene structure have been investigated by conventional and time-resolved spectrometric techniques. These compounds can be photocoloured with a fairly high quantum yield (Phi(PC) >= 0.5). The bleaching is thermal and photochemical. The fluorescence emission is scarceor undetectable. No triplet absorption was observed by laser flash photolysis, whereas transients unaffected by oxygen (lifetimes in the range 60 ns-10 mu s) were detected beside the metastable closed form.

    The present invention relates to a time temperature indicator comprising at least one indicator compound in a first isomeric form, which is converted into a second isomeric form of said indicator compound in a valence isomerization reaction without migration of an atom or chemical group attached to said indicator compound in a time and temperature dependent manner, wherein the formation of the second isomeric form is detectable by monitoring a physical characteristic of the indicator. The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing such a time-temperature indicator comprising the steps of (a) embedding in or atop a matrix said indicator compound; and (b) inducing the formation of a metastable state of said embedded indicator compound.
