    Racemic 5,9-dimethylpentadecane and 5,9-dimethylhexadecane, the major and minor constituents, respectively, of the sex pheromone of Leucoptera coffeella, have been synthesized from citronellol in 56-58% overall yield through six steps. Ultrasound irradiation efficiently supported tosylation of alcohols (two steps) as well as the subsequent cross coupling reactions with the pertinent Grignard reagents (also two steps).

    Disclosed is a cooling sensation agent composition or sensory stimulation agent composition which contains at least one of diester compounds of dicarboxylic acid represented by the formula (1) wherein A represents CH 2 or CH═CH, n represents an integer of 0 to 4 when A is CH 2 , or 1 when A is CH═CH, B is an alcohol residue having 10 to 18 carbon atoms and containing a para-menthane skeleton, which may have a substituent, and C is an alcohol residue having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, which may have a substituent as well as a flavor or fragrance composition, a beverage, a food product, a perfume or cosmetic product, a toiletry product, daily utensil products or groceries, a fiber, a fiber product, clothes, clothing or a medicine, wherein the cooling sensation agent composition or the sensory stimulation agent composition is compounded.

    A chiral phenylether compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein X is a halogen atom; m is an integer from 3 to 5, n is an integer from 3 to 12 and * designates an asymmetric carbon is disclosed. The chiral phenylether compounds are useful to prepare chiral smectic phase pyrimidine phenylether liquid crystal compounds of the formula. ##STR2## The reaction is carried by reacting (I) with butylithium, dissolving in ether and reacting with a 1-bromoalkane to yield (IV). Compounds (IV) are particularly well suited to broaden the useful temperature range of ferroelectric liquid crystal materials.

    Several racemic methyl decanoic acids have been synthesised and Successfully resolved in esterification with 1-hexadecanol at a(w)=0.8 in cyclohexane using immobilised Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) as the catalyst. The enantiomeric ratios (E=2.8-68) obtained were surprisingly high even when the methyl group was as remotely located as in 8-methyldecanoic acid (E=25). Interestingly, the lipase shows enantiopreference for the S-enantiomer when the methyl group is located on even numbered carbons i.e. for the 2-,4-,6- and 8-methyldecanoic acids and to the R-enantiomer when the methyl group is located on uneven numbered carbons i.e. for the 3-,5- and 7-methyldecanoic acids.
