A method to convert gamma-keto-alkynoic esters to gamma-hydroxy-alpha,beta-(E)-alkenoic esters is described. This functional group transformation was accomplished in one step by means of NaBH, reduction in methanol. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Calix[4]arene derived bis(spirodienone) can act as a 4π component in cycloaddition reaction with a variety of carbo- and hetero-dienophiles yielding the bisadducts in excellent to quantitative yields. Bis(spirodienone) also undergoes addition reactions with dichlorocarbene resulting in mono- and bis-dichlorocyclopropyl derived bis(spiroenones) in excellent yields.
Three series of methyl 5-substituted 2-aminofuran-4-keto-3-carboxylates have been prepared following a multicomponent reaction strategy by the addition of an isocyanide to 4-oxo-2-butynoate in the presence of an aldehyde.
