A new concise and practical method for the preparation of polyol chiral building blocks has been developed based on the finding of unprecedented Red-Al promoted intramolecular reductive cleavage of benzyl 4-hydroxy-2-butenyl ether structures and the synthetic utility has been demonstrated by accomplishment of an expeditious synthesis of the compactin lactone derivative.
