A series of novel cyano-substituted bipyridine derivatives were obtained in good yields (45–72%) via the reaction of malononitrile dimer with isomeric azachalcones. For all synthesized compounds, spectral-fluorescent properties were carefully investigated, and correlation thereof with chemical structure was found. Exposure of 4-azachalcones to HCl gas produced the corresponding HCl salts with a head-to-tail stacked alignment, irradiation of which produced the corresponding syn-HT dimers with high regio- and stereoselectivities, thus showing the effectiveness of the cascade process in crystals.

A series of 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyrimidines were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum. Of the 18 compounds synthesized, 14 compounds showed MIC in the range of 0.25-2 microg/mL. These compounds are in vitro several fold more active than pyrimethamine.
