    Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Zinc(II) Complexes with Schiff Bases Derived from 2-Acetylpyridine

    A series of mononuclear zinc(II) complexes, with the formulae [ZnBr(MEA)N-3] (1), [Zn(MA)I-2] (2), and [ZnCl(PA)N-3] (3), where MEA, MA, and PA are N-methyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-ylethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine, (2-morpholin-4-ylethyl)-(1-pyridin-2-ylethylidene)amine, and (2-piperidin-1-ylethyl)-(1-pyridin-2-ylethylidene) amine, respectively, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Zn atoms in (1) and (2) adopt distorted square pyramidal geometry, and that in (3) adopts geometry between the square pyramidal and the trigonal-bipyramidal.

    A series of Schiff bases derived from 2-acetylpyridne and their metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectral studies. The complexes were screened for anti-bacterial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Acinetobacter baumanni (AC), Klebsiella pneumonie (KB) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) using the disc diffusion and micro broth dilution assays. Based on the overall results, the complexes showed the highest activities against MRSA while a weak antibacterial activity was observed against A. baumanii and P. aeruginosa.

  • Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Copper(II) Complexes Derived from 5-Methoxy-2-[(2-morpholin-4-ylethylimino)methyl]phenolate and (2-Morpholin-4-ylethyl)-(1-pyridin-2-ylethylidene)amine

    A pair of copper(II) complexes, [CuL1(ONO2)(OH2)] 1 and [CuBrL2N3] 2, where L1 is 5-methoxy-2-[(2-morpholin-4-ylethylimino)methyl]phenolate, and L2 is (2-morpholin-4-ylethyl)-(1-pyridin-2-ylethylidene)amine, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, with a = 10.496(2), b = 19.113(3), c = 8.586(2) Å, β = 105.186(10)°. Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with a = 16.606(3), b = 7.357(2), c = 26.043(5) Å, β = 94.996(2)°. The Cu atom in each complex is five-coordinate in a square pyramidal geometry. The synthesis and crystal structures of a pair of copper(II) complexes with Schiff bases have been presented.
