Semiempirical calculations (AM1) are useful to predict the thermodynamics of ketalization reactions. The calculated unspecific regioselectivity of the ketalization of estra-4.9-dien-3.17-dione (1) with 2.2-dimethylpropanediol using equilibrium conditions was demonstrated experimentally. Emphasizing kinetic control of the reaction by working at low temperature allowed to synthesize the spiro ketal of 1 in position 3 in high yield.
