peroxy-bromides is reacted with silver ion in organic solvents. Cyclic peroxide formation occurs along with peroxide transfer to the carbon originally bearing bromine. A preference for five-membered ring peroxonium ion formation is observed in these intramolecular alkylations.

Evidence for the existence of peroxonium intermediates

Low temperature 1H and 2H nmr are consistent with the presence of peroxoniumintermediates in the intramolecular alkylation of two different bromoperoxides. In one case decomposition of this peroxoniumintermediates results in unusual heterolytic oxygen—oxygen bond cleavage and methyl migration.
