A process for the preparation of a primary hydroxyl group containing epoxy resin having from 1.5 to 2.5 epoxy groups per molecule by reacting at a temperature of from 100 to 235 °C in the presence of an etherification catalyst
a) an epoxy resin having more than 1.5 and at most 2 epoxy groups per molecule and an epoxy group concentration (EGC) of from 1 to 7 eq.kg⁻¹ with
b) an aliphatic trihydric primary alcohol having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, under the proviso that the ratio (R) of epoxy equivalents of reactant a) to hydroxyl equivalents of reactant b) is selected within the range of from (1.2-0.11 EGC) to (1.3+0.12 EGC).

Hydroxy functional acrylamido amino resins and hydroxy functional glycidamido amino resins. The hydroxy functional acrylamido amino resins are produced by reaction of alkoxymethyl amino resins with acrylamide to introduce acrylamidomethyl groups and then with a polyol to introduce hydroxy functionality. The hydroxy functional acrylamido amino resins are epoxidized to form the hydroxy functional glycidamido amino resins which can then be formulated with epoxy reactants to provide curable epoxy systems.
Curable epoxy systems comprising polyglycidamides and epoxy reactants. The polyglycidamides are hydroxy functional polyglycidamides derived from amino resins. The epoxy systems can be used as laminating, encapsulating and coating resins. When the epoxy reactant is an anhydride, cure under ambient conditions is obtained.

An aromatic polyglycidyl polyether resin having on average of from 1.5 to 4.5 epoxy groups and of from 0.1 to 18 primary or secondary -OR groups per molecule, wherein from 5 to 95 % of the -OR groups have the general formula -O-CH₂-CHOH-CH₂-O-C(O)-R′, in which R′ is a branched C₄₋₁₇ alkyl group, the remainder of the -OR groups being hydroxyl groups.
