    An optimized synthetic protocol toward highly reactive Rieke zinc is applied for the preparation of a series of omega-(2,5-dibromothiophene-3-yl)alkyl acetate monomers and statistical copolythiophenes derived thereof, with 10% of ester-functionalized side chains. The obtained conjugated polymers are attractive electron donor materials for organic solar cells, notably to increase the thermodynamic stability of the bulk heterojunction polymer:fullerene active layer blend, and are fully characterized by a combination of spectroscopic, thermal analysis and electrochemical techniques.     Disclosed are improved methods for the synthesis of phospholipid ether analogs and alkyl phosphocholine analogs. The methods allow greater versatility of the reactants used and greater ease in synthesizing alkyl chains of varying length while affording reaction temperatures at room temperature or below. The methods disclosed herein provide reactants and conditions using alkyl halides and organozinc reagents and do not utilize Gringard reactions thus, allowing greater ease of their separation and purity of products. The PLE compounds synthesized by the methods disclosed herein can also be used for synthesizing high specific activity phospholipid ether (PLE) analogs, for use in treatment and diagnosis of cancer.

    A cyclic ester such as lactides and the like is mixed, in an organic solvent, with an alkyl aluminum compound such as trimethyl aluminum, triethyl aluminum and the like, and then, to the resulting mixture, at least one selected from the group consisting of an organic lithium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic sodium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic potassium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic zinc ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic magnesium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic tin ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic calcium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, an organic titanium ring-opening polymerization catalyst, and an amine ring-opening polymerization catalyst to allow ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic ester, thereby a polyester is obtained.

    A cyclic ester, for example 3,6-bis[2-(methylthio)ethyl]-1,4-dioxane-2,5-dione, is mixed, in an organic solvent, with an alkyl aluminum compound represented by a formula [I]: Rn Al X3-n, for example trimethyl aluminum, triethyl aluminum, tri-isobutyl aluminum, tri-n-hexyl aluminum, tri-n-butyl aluminum, tri-n-octyl aluminum, diethyl aluminum chloride, ethyl aluminum sesquichloride, ethyl aluminum dichloride, or diisobutyl aluminum hydride. The resulting mixture is then mixed with at least one ring-opening polymerization catalyst selected from the group consisting of a dialkyl zinc and a dialkyl magnesium to allow ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic ester, thereby obtaining a polyester.
