The invention provides an aldose reductase inhibitory pyrrole derivative of the formula:
in which Ra is an optionally substituted benzyl or cinnamyl radical, and ring A is the benzene ring of an optionally substituted benzo[b]thiophene, benzo[b]furan, quinoline or N-alkylquino- lone, together with pharmaceutically acceptable salts and non-toxic biodegradable precursors thereof.
The compounds of formula I are useful in the treatment or prophylaxis of the side-effects of diabetes or galactosemia.

Thiophene-fused isoindigo (TII) was synthesized from thieno[2,3-flindol-6(7H)-one in a one-pot reaction, in which the alkylation, oxidation and condensation were finished in one step. It exhibits better intramolecular charge transfer properties and higher reductive potential compared with isoindigo(II), as evidenced by its optical and electrochemical properties, which shows that it might be used as a building block for n-type or ambipolar OFET materials.
