The present invention deals with novel compounds their applications and a process their preparation. The compounds are novel amphoteric surfactants that contain a hydroxyl group and two carboxylic groups per hydroxyl group. The compounds have a unique structure, having multiple carboxyl groups on each amino group. The utility for these novel polymers is as softening, anti-tangle, and conditioning agents for use in personal care, textile and related applications.
Disclosed herein are lignin adducts of the formula ##SPC1## Wherein X is an alkali metal cation, such as sodium, potassium and lithium. These lignin adducts are made by reacting an alkali lignin or sulfonated lignin with up to 10 moles of a salt of epoxysuccinate at a temperature of from 50.degree.C. to 150.degree.C. The lignodicarboxylic acid and its salts are useful as a dispersant and metal complexing agent.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing phosphotartaric acid and salts thereof, wherein a reaction mixture containing epoxysuccinic acid or a salt thereof, an orthophosphoric acid source and water as main constituents is reacted, to compositions obtainable by this process and to the use of such compositions for treating water in water-bearing systems, in particular as an additive for inhibition of formation of scale or inhibition of corrosion in water bearing systems.
