A process for the preparation of aniline compounds of formula (I), wherein n and R are as defined in claim 1, by reacting nitro compounds of formula (II), wherein n and R are as defined, with hydrazine at elevated temperature in the presence of an aqueous base. The compounds of formula (I) are suitable as intermediates in the preparation of herbicides of the isobenzofuranone type.

A series of novel types of 7-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)oxy- and -thio-3-methyl-1 (3H)-isobenzofuranones were discovered at Dr R Maag AG.
