Carboxylic acids are converted into isonitriles via Schmidt rearrangement of the derived acyl azides, addition of phenylselenol to the resultant isocyanate, tributylstannane reduction and dehydration.

1-Acylamino-1-(trimethylsiloxy)alkanes react with carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles to give the corresponding 1-substituted-1-acylaminoalkanes. The 1-acylamino-1-(trimethylsiloxy)alkanes can also give rise to enamides, and by this route the mild antibiotic tuberin, and the isomeric (Z)-tuberin have been prepared. A further example of their reactions is illustrated with the acid-catalysed intramolecular cyclisation onto a carbon–carbon double bond. These transformations show that 1-acylamino-1-(trimethylsiloxy)alkanes are versatile precursors to synthetically useful acylimines.
Reaction of phenylsulfonyl formamides, readily available in a single step from an aromatic aldehyde and sodium phenylsulfinate, with ketene diethylacetal under basic conditions gives N-formyl β-amino acid esters in good yield, which can be kinetically resolved with a lipase.

.alpha.,.beta.-Unsaturated nitriles are prepared by reacting an aldehyde with formamide in the presence of an acid and the presence or absence of a non-aromatic solvent to give an N-alkenyl-formamide, which is then passed, in the gas phase, over a dehydration catalyst at an elevated temperature. The nitriles obtainable by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the preparation of dyes, crop protection agents, plasticizers and drugs.
