Parallel NMR Based on Solution Magnetic-Susceptibility Differences. Application to Isotopic Effects on Self-Diffusion

Different susceptibility NMR line shifts can be induced in distinct liquid solutions by dissolving different concentrations of complexes of paramagnetic lanthanide Ln(3+) ions. We show how these solutions, put in capillaries, can be simultaneously studied with a standard high-resolution spectrometer. After theoretical justification the method is illustrated by an investigation of the effects or H/D substitution on self-diffusion in heavy water. Non-Stokesian effects are observed.

Mesoionic carbene-iridium complex 1a has been investigated in the hydrogenisotopeexchange (HIE) reaction of anilines. By employing 1 mol % of 1a as catalyst, anilines were selectively deuterated at the ortho-position with high deuteration levels. High ortho-selectivity was observed for anilines with various competing directing groups, which is in contrast with catalytic results of Kerr's catalysts

Deuterium aromatic substituted compounds were prepared by microwave irradiation of the parent unlabeled compounds in the presence of deuterium oxide and deuterium chloride. The percentage of deuterium incorporation was investigated under various reaction conditions. A rapid synthesis of 2H-substituted benzimidazole under microwave irradiation is described.
