    Monoester monoacid fluoride of dicarboxylic acid is produced by allowing dicaroxylic acid fluoride represented by the following general formula: FOCCF(CF3)OCF2(A)p(CF2)qCOF where A is a bifunctional perfluorinated group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; p is 0 or 1; and q is 0 or an integer of 1-10, to react with an alcohol having at least 3 carbon atoms, thereby esterifying the terminal CF2COF group. Such selective monoesterification reaction is effective for separation and purification of a dicarboxylic acid difluoride isomer mixture comprising symmetrical dicarboxylic acid difluoride and asymmetrical dicarboxylic acid difluoride.

    A new efficient and convenient synthetic process of perfluorinated vinyl ethers containing an ester group was developed by pyrolysis in the presence of α-trifluoromethyl moiety without loss of –COF functional group followed by alcoholysis in high yield.

    Disclosed herein are a novel perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether compound, a process for preparing a copolymer by using the perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether compound, and an optical plastic material comprising a copolymer prepared by the process. More specifically, the perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether has a particular molecular structure; the process is performed by copolymerizing the perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether compound with a common fluorinated olefin in the presence of a perfluorinated radical initiator; and, the optical plastic material comprises a copolymer prepared by the process and optionally a dopant. The copolymerization of the perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether with a common fluorinated olefin can provide a copolymer having a high molecular weight. In addition, appropriate control of the composition of the monomers can provide a completely amorphous copolymer. Since the polymer prepared by the process exhibits excellent thermal properties and is substantially transparent in the UV and near IR regions, it can be usefully applied to various optical plastic materials. Furthermore, a preform for a GI type plastic optical fiber fabricated by using the copolymer and the dopant has a high T g , thus being stable, and a parabolic refractive index profile due to the presence of the dopant.

  • Selective reaction of hexafluoropropylene oxide with perfluoroacyl fluorides

    A method is provided for reacting hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) with a perfluoroacyl fluorides according to the formula X—R f —COF (II) to selectively produce a monoaddition product according to the formula X—R f —CF 2 —O—CF(CF 3 )COF (I), wherein selectivity for the monoaddition product over the biaddition product is 90% or greater or more typically 95% or greater. A continuous or repeated-batch process is provided comprising the steps of: a) providing a mixture of X—R f —COF (II), a fluoride salt, and a polar solvent; b) adding hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) in an amount such that X—R f —COF remains in molar excess of HFPO by at least 10% and reacting X—R f —COF with HFPO; c) separating unreacted X—R f —COF from a mixture of addition products of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) and X—R f —COF; and d) repeating step a) using unreacted X—R f —COF separated in step c).
