Perfluoroalkylbenzenesulfonyl chlorides, perfluoroalkylnaphthalenesulfonyl chlorides, and their metal salts

Meta-perfluoro-n-alkylbenzenesulfonyl chlorides and 1-perfluoro-n-alkylnaphthalene-5-sulfonyl chlorides were synthesized from the corresponding perfluoroalkylaromatics in good yield by the action of chlorosulfonic acid. From the acid chlorides, salts (RSO3M, where M = Li, K, Ba, Zn and Al) were prepared and their TGA curves obtained. With the exception of the aluminum salts, the materials were stable to at least 350-degrees-C. All the salts were essentially insoluble in Cl(CFClCF2)3-4Cl.
Bis(trifluoroacety) peroxide was found to be thermally stable, and trifluoromenthylation of aromaticcompounds was studied using this peroxide. Thrifluoromethylation of electron-rich benzenes, furan, thiophene, or their benzo derivatives proceeded with the peroxide in moderate to high yields.

A fluorine-containing aromatic derivative is produced by causing a di(haloacyl)peroxide to react upon benzene, a mono-substituted benzene, naphthalene, or a mono-substituted naphthalene thereby introducing an X(CF.sub.2).sub.n -group into the benzene ring or the naphthalene ring.
