    Ultraviolet light absorber with low surface energy: synthesis and characterization

    Novel fluorine-containing ultraviolet absorbers (FBPs) with low surface energy were successfully synthesized based on 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone (BP-1), and their structures were characterized by H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR, FTIR, and HRMS. UV absorption of FBPs was studied in 10(-4) M dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), which demonstrated the superior UV absorption capability of FBPs (ca. epsilon=1.7 x 10(4) to 2.2 x 10(4) at lambda(max)) over the matrix (epsilon=1.7 x 10(4) at lambda(max)). Quantum chemistry calculation was performed to investigate the stable structure and UV electronic absorption bands of FBPs. The surface chemistry information of high-chlorinated polyethylene (HCPE) coating films embedded with ultraviolet absorbers (UVAs) was given by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurement. The results show that the surface enrichment capability of FBPs is remarkably better than traditional UVAs (including BP-1, BP-3, BP-12) because of the low surface energy properties of FBPs.     The invention relates to multichromophoric compounds which have been found to be effective ultraviolet stabilizers. The invention also relates to ultraviolet degradable organic compositions containing a stabilizing amount of the multichromophoric composition to prevent such degradation. These stabilizers are effective in the presence of other additives commonly employed in polymeric compositions including, for example, pigments, colorants, fillers, reinforcing agents and the like. These ultraviolet stabilizers may also be incorporated into the organic compositions in the polymer melt or dissolved in the polymer dope, coated on the exterior of the molded article, film or extruded fiber.

    The present invention relates to novel sunscreen agents which have the ability to absorb both UVA and UVB wavelength radiation. The sunscreen agents comprise a specific type of UVA-absorbing chromophore covalently bonded to a specific type of UVB-absorbing chromophore. The chromophore moieties are covalently bonded together such that the electron systems of these moieties are not directly coupled. The present invention further relates to sunscreen compositions containing the hereinbefore described type of sunscreen agents. Furthermore, the present invention relates to methods for protecting the skin of humans of lower animals from the effects of UVA and UVB wavelength radiation. This method comprises topically applying to the skin an effective coating of a sunscreen composition of the present invention.

    The invention relates to multichromophoric compounds which have been found to be effective ultraviolet stabilizers. The invention also relates to ultraviolet degradable organic compositions containing a stabilizing amount of the multichromophoric composition to prevent such degradation. These stabilizers are effective in the presence of other additives commonly employed in polymeric compositions including, for example, pigments, colorants, fillers, reinforcing agents and the like. These ultraviolet stablizers may also be incorporated into the organic compositions in the polymer melt or dissolved in the polymer dope, coated on the exterior of the molded article, film or extruded fiber.
