    Reduction of azobenzene by neodymium(II), dysprosium(II), and thulium(II) diiodides
    摘要:
    The diiodides of divalent neodymium (1), dysprosium (2), and thulium (3) LnI(2) readily reduce azobenzene under ambient conditions to give binuclear complexes [LnI(THF)(2)](2)(N2Ph2)(2) (Ln = Nd (4), Dy (5), Tin (6)). Magnetic measurements and X-ray structural analyses of 5 and 6 revealed that the bridging N2Ph2 ligands are dianions bounded to the trivalent lanthanoid. The complexes displayed photochromic properties. Ytterbium iodide YbI2(THF)(2) reacts with N2Ph2 at 80 degreesC yielding the known [YbI(THF)(3)](2)(N2Ph2)(2) (7). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.     The reactions of LnI(2) (Ln = Nd (1) or Dy (2)) with cyclopentadiene (CpH) in THF at 0 degreesC afforded the CpLnI(2)(THF)(3) complexes in 65-67% yields. The reaction of thulium diiodide (3) with an excess of CpH at 60 degreesC produced CpTmI2(THF)(3), Cp2TmI(THF)(2), and TmI3(THF)(3) in 21, 58, and 63% yields, respectively. The reactions of 1 and 2 with pentamethyl-cyclopentadiene (Cp*H) in THF were accompanied by disproportionation giving rise to the CP*(2)LnI(THF)(2) and LnI(3)(THF)(x) complexes. Neodymium triiodide was isolated in the ionic form [NdI2(THF)(5)](+)[NdI4(THF)(2)](-). Its structure and the structure of CpTmI2(THF)(3) were established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

    The reactions of LnI(2)(Ln = Nd, Dy, Tm) with benzonitrile are accompanied by disproportionation, resulting in the formation of triiodides LnI(3)(PhCN)(4) and an intractable mixture of monoiodine derivatives LnI(R)R'. Hydrolysis of the mixture gives 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-tiazine, 2,3,5,6-thetraphenyl-1,4-pyrazine, and 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole. The reaction of dysprosium diiodide with acrylonitrile gives a metal-containing polymer with a molecular weight of 2700. Treatment of the polymer with water results in separation of DyI2(OH)(H2O)(x) to give metal-free polyacrylonitrile with a molecular weight of 2400.
