Through the interception of amide ylides with sulfonamides, we herein report the first general example of an intermolecular condensation reaction between sulfonamides and amides. Beyond formamides, this approach was successfully applied to a variety of lactams and linear amides, giving rise to a broad array of (E)-N-sulfonyl amidines.
A highly general, experimentally simple, and inexpensive catalyst system was developed for the amidation of aryl iodides by using 5 mol% of CuI as catalyst, 20 mol% of an amino acid as ligand, and K3PO4 as base. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Direct Use of Copper-Containing Minerals in Goldberg Arylation of Amides
Unsymmetric, N-substituted benzimidazoles and imidazopyridines can be prepared directly from 2-halonitroarenes and amides through Pd(TFA) 2 /(R)-BINAP-catalyzed cross-coupling and subsequent reductive aminocyclization. This sequence can be conducted by a one-pot procedure. The method is versatile and allows the straightforward, regioselective preparation of these important nitrogen heterocycles.

Direct N-Arylation of Amides: An Improvement of the Goldberg-Reaction: The copper-catalyzed N-arylation of amides, the Goldberg reaction, usually requires drastic reaction conditions and produces only moderate yields of the desired products. Much better results can be achieved by modifying the reaction conditions, We used copper on silica as a catalyst and potassium acetate as a base and continuously removed the resulting acetic acid from the reaction mixture. In this way we gained high, in some cases nearly quantitative yields of the arylated or heteroarylated products.
