    Disclosed is a glycol compound which is useful as a raw material and an intermediate for synthetic resins, additives for synthetic resins, medicines, cosmetics, food additives, surfactants and the like, further disclosed is a method for producing the compound. The glycol compound is represented by the following Formula (1): wherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms or a halogen atom; n represents an integer of 1 to 4; and when n represents an integer of 2 to 4, plural R may be the same or different from each other.

    The present invention provides an improved method for continuously producing a high-molecular-weight polycarbonate resin by carrying out a linking and highly-polymerizing reaction of an aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer with an aliphatic diol compound wherein the retention time of the reaction mixture in the linking and highly-polymerizing reactor is shortened to achieve excellent performance. The process comprises a process (A) for producing an aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer by polycondensation reaction of an aromatic dihydroxy compound with diester carbonate and a process(B) for conducting linking and highly-polymerizing reaction of the aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer with an aliphatic diol compound in the linking and highly-polymerizing reactor, wherein the aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer produced by the process (A) is fed continuously to the linking and highly-polymerizing reactor, while the aliphatic diol compound is fed continuously thereto under reduced pressure of 10 torr or less to carry out the reaction.

    Provided is an improved method for continuously producing a high molecular weight polycarbonate resin by subjecting an aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer and an aliphatic diol compound to a linking and highly polymerizing reaction, wherein even an aliphatic diol compound having a comparatively low boiling point can be allowed to efficiently contribute to the linking and highly polymerizing reaction, and a high molecular weight polycarbonate resin of superior quality can be produced both economically and advantageously. Provided is a method which comprises producing an aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer by a polycondensation reaction between an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diester carbonate, adding thereto an aliphatic diol compound having an aliphatic group that bonds to a terminal hydroxyl group to obtain a prepolymer mixture, and subjecting the resulting prepolymer mixture to a linking and highly polymerizing reaction under a reduced pressure condition, wherein the aliphatic diol compound is added at a pressure exceeding 200 torr, and then, the prepolymer mixture is subjected to a linking and highly polymerizing reaction before the terminal hydroxyl group concentration of the aromatic polycarbonate prepolymer in the prepolymer mixture reaches 2000 ppm.
