  A highly efficient method for regiospecific alpha-functionalization of aspartic acid is described. Key step is the synthesis of a N-protected and regioselectively alpha-carboxy-activated heterocyclic intermediate from aspartic acid and hexafluoroacetone. The new strategy offers La. a two step access to the sweetener Aspartame(R) and to libraries of aspartame analogues.

  An oral chlorhexidine formulation is provided comprising one or more chlorhexidine salts, together with other optional active ingredients such, for example, as fluoride. Aspartame, and other optical flavouring agents such, for example, as peppermint oil are used to mask the bitterness of the chlorhexidine, whilst a combination of excipients is used which preserves the solubility and stability of the chlorhexidine and other optional active ingredients in water. The oral formulation according to the invention preserves more than 90 % of the label strength of chlorhexidine salts when dispersed in water.
