  [GRAPHICS]The regioselective syntheses and structures are reported for two tris-macrocylic compounds, each possessing two antiparallel loops on a macrocyclic scaffold constrained by two oxazoles and two thiazoles. NMR solution structures show the loops projecting from the same face of the macrocycle. Such molecules are shown to be prototypes for mimicking multiple loops of proteins.

  Two new analogues of serum thymic factor (STF), [Dab3]- and [Asn5, Gln9]-STF and four thymic factor fragments, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-OH, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-OH, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-OH and H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-Gly-Ser-OH, were synthesized by the solution method, and were tested to determine their effects on the low E-rosette forming cells in patients with chronic renal failure. The analogue [Dab3]-STF and three fragments, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-OH, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-Gly-OH and H-Lys-Ser-Gln-Gly-Gly-Ser-OH, increased E-rosette forming capacity when incubated in vitro with patient's blood, but [Asn5, Gln9]-STF and the tripeptide, H-Lys-Ser-Gln-OH, had no effect.

  Eight kinds of cysteine-containing peptides related to human hepatic metallothionein were synthesized by conventional methods. The metal-binding properties of these peptides with Zn2+ and Cd2+ were indicated by an increase of ultraviolet absorbance resulting from mercaptide formation. The Cd-binding activities of various peptides obtained here were assessed by measuring the increase in absorbance of mercaptide at 250 nm as a function of the concentration of Cd. The binding abilities of the peptides with Cd differed substancially.
