A general process for the efficient synthesis of vinylsulfones has been developed using commercially available sulfinic acid sodium salts and dibromides. A variety of phenyl and methyl vinylsulfones have been formed in good yields, in the absence of any catalyst.

Smooth and mild: Mg or Zn TMP bases (TMP=2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidyl) allow the smooth metalation of various types of polyfunctional unsaturated substrates. Several sensitive functional groups such as ester, nitro, or trifluoromethylcarbonyl groups are tolerated. The new Zn or Mg intermediates undergo acylation, allylation, or cross‐coupling reactions in satisfactory yields.
The three‐component free‐radical carbo‐alkenylation of electron‐richolefins has been studied, varying the substitution pattern in the alkene, in the radical precursor and in the final acceptor. New vinylsulfones were also prepared and their reactivity investigated. The scope and limitations of the process was established, and the reaction mechanism clarified using selected dienes as radical clocks
