Abstract An efficient and diastereoselectivesynthesis of functionalized δ‐lactones, based on silyl‐cupration of dimethyl‐2‐alkylidene glutarates, is described. Unmasking of the silicon group and lactonization afford the title compounds with good to excellent diastereocontrol depending on the size of the R substituent on the glutarate.

This paper describes a convenient synthesis of disubstituted functionalized δ-lactams based on Michael addition of primary amines to dimethyl-E-2-alkylidene glutarates 2 followed by an intramolecular cyclisation.

Nucleophelic substitution of dialkyl (E)-2-bromomethylene glutarates 2 by magnesium dialkyl cuprates generated in situ provided a regio and highly stereoselective methodology for the synthesis of dialkyl 3-alkylidene glutarates 3 in good yields.

Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation and aminohydroxylation of (E)-dimethyl-2-alkylidene glutarates 2 were shown to afford enantio-enriched or enantiopure highly functionalized γ-butyrolactones 3 and 7.
