Electrochemical Oxidative Cyclization: Synthesis of Polysubstituted Pyrrole from Enamines

Diverse polysubstituted pyrroles were synthesized through electrochemical oxidative cyclization of enamines under mild conditions. By avoiding the use of metal catalysts and oxidants, this method is both more environmentally friendly and atomic economic than other synthetic protocols.
Azomethine ylides were generated from N-(α-silylbenzyl)amides by thermal silicon shift to the oxygen and trapped with dipolarophiles to give the same products as those from the corresponding nitrileylides via elimination of silanol.

A new, one-step procedure for the generation of azomethineylides, 4 and 20, via chloroiminium salts, 3 and 19, is reported. The generation of the azomethineylides was confirmed by their trapping with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) which, upon spontaneous 1,4-dehydrochlorination, gave the corresponding pyrroles 17 and 21.
